Region 4 VP
Cheryl Burns

I live in a northern suburb of Fort Worth, Texas. I have birds, a large goldfish pond, dogs and some chickens. I love to share a cool beverage on the back porch which is open to friends and visitors all year long.

I have been a member of NFSS since about 2006. I first became an officer in about 2009 in the regional VP role where I currently serve as region 4 vice president. I have been a pet bird owner and hobby breeder for more than 25 years. During this time I have been active in bird clubs and organizations, including serving as a board member or officer for many of these organizations. I have been a speaker for many bird clubs and have published articles in BirdTalk, AFA Watchbird and the NFSS journal. I build and maintain websites and FaceBook sites for several organizations. I believe that a strong network of avian people is critical to making the world the best it can be for our birds in both captivity and the wild.

My aviary is a hobby and is called New World Ranch Aviary. The ranch refers to my childhood of growing up on a large sheep ranch in Colorado. I grew up with animals around me from before the time I could walk. I can’t remember a time I wasn’t around the horses, dogs, cats and sheep on the ranch. I enjoy aviculture because it allows me to do many of the things we strived to do on a ranch: raise healthy, well-conformed animals in a responsible way. I currently keep conures, pionus, caiques and show-quality society finches. I have previously kept cherry finches, button quail, diamond doves, Cuban melodious finches, saffron finches and yellow-legged honey creepers.

I show birds in the Parrot and Finch divisions. My birds have placed best in division and on top bench several times over the years. I have won best in show in parrots and finches several times in our local Texas shows. I earned the NFSS Champion Exhibitor award from 2009-2012 and the NFSS Exhibitor of Excellence Award in 2013 and had a society finch earn Champion in 2015. Showing birds helps me to know how to select good quality breeding stock and provides a standard to work for within my breeding program. Society finches are my passion and I specifically love the American self chocolate, chestnut and fawns.

I am a training and communications professional with a B.A. in Public Relations from Abilene Christian University. I have more than 25 years of training experience with a specialization in instructional design. I currently am director of curriculum design for a large financial services firm.

When not working away at on one of the many websites or cleaning the aviary, I enjoy nature photography, riding my bicycle and motorsports.
